Why Set
Up a Discussion Group
Newsletters can be difficult to create because you
have to come up with all that "content" -- the
stuff that goes into the newsletter. It takes
one person, or a team of people, to produce a set
amount of content on a regular schedule. It's hard
enough to that in itself, but when you're doing it
as a sideline, or to promote the thing you're truly
interested in, it becomes even more difficult.
Newsletters are a one-to-many format. You create the
content, and send it to everyone on your list. But
there's a way to cheat. Why not let someone else
create the content for you? You can do that by
setting up a discussion group based on the e-mail
system. With a discussion group the people involved
in the discussion are, in effect, providing the
content. (Though you could also publish small,
occasional articles as part of a discussion list.)
But in some ways discussion lists can take as much
time as creating a newsletter, and the content is
sometimes not as good.
E-mail discussion groups -- or discussion lists, as
they're often known -- are "free-for-all"
conversations. Everybody can talk to everybody.
There are
two
ways to
handle discussion groups.
